چکیده

In contrast to nouns, little is known about the graded structure of adjective categories. In this study we investigate if adjectives categories show a similar graded structure and explain it using a similarity-based account. The results show a reliable graded structure which is adequately explained by two formal models based on prototypes and exemplars, therefore generalizing the model performance from concrete nouns to adjectives. Finally, we show the attention weights of these models deal with the additional challenge of antonymy in adjectives and discuss the findings in the light of alternative accounts that do not rely on item-similarity.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition

Three possible determinants of graded structure (typicality) were observed in common taxonomic categories and goal-derived categories: (1) an exemplar's similarity to ideals associated with goals its category serves; (2) an exemplar's similarity to the central tendency of its category (family resemblance); and (3) an exemplar's frequency of instantiation (people's subjective estimates of how of...

Categories of fuzzy topology in the context of graded ditopologies on textures

This paper extends the notion of ditopology to the case where openness and closedness are given in terms of {em a priori} unrelated Drading functions. The resulting notion of graded ditopology is considered both in the setting of lattices and in that textures, the relation between the two approaches being discussed in detail. Interrelations between graded ditopologies and ditopologies on textur...

A Polish-English Contrastive Study of the Order of Premodifying Adjectives: A Procedural Model Account

Some restrictions on the order of English premodifying adjectives were already pointed out by Whorf (1956). The first manual corpus studies of the order of premodifying adjectives were carried out by Goyvaerts (1968), Vendler (1968), Quirk and Greenbaum (1973), and Dixon (1982). In all, I have encountered over a hundred of studies concerning the ordering of premodifying adjectives. As a result ...
